Travel Goods Trends Log — Running Record
Trends Log / Running Record / Started July 6, 2026
The running line under the weekly recaps. Each week feeds this ledger so the trend is visible over time. Newest notes sit at the top of each theme.
T1 · Modular split-packs (Building)
Jul 13 — Mission Workshop Meridian Modular shipped, built in the USA in Challenge EPX 200 with the LandSpeeder pouch-attachment system, grow or shrink capacity by module. Second data point after Peak Design. Thread firming from New to Building.
Jul 6 — Peak Design 2026 line shipped. Flagship 2-in-1 splits a 34L pack from a 16L daypack, zips to a 40L carry-on or separates into two bags. Answers the one-bag traveler who still wants a daypack at destination. First data point; watch for copycats.
T2 · Enforcement over regulation (Building)
Jul 13 — Twist on the Jul 6 read. United and American pulled the sizer frames off boarding gates and moved them to check-in. Enforcement is splitting, not just tightening: harder at check-in, back to agent eyeballing at the gate. Delta keeps its gate sizers. Reward shifts to bags that read honest and compliant at a glance.
Jul 6 — No airline size numbers changed. The shift is automated gate scanners replacing the honor system, and personal items now measured as strictly as carry-ons. United at 35 airports late 2025, targeting 80+ by end 2026. Favors bags that hold an honest shape. Direct tailwind for structured construction.
T3 · Materials that read as natural (Building)
Jul 13 — Ucon Acrobatics Moss Series spins a fabric from recycled fashion waste with high mono-material rates, built to actually recycle at end of life. Pushes the material story past look and feel into recyclable construction. New angle on the same thread.
Jul 6 — Tumi Mediterranean Escape uses fabrics engineered to feel like high-end linen. Osprey Talon VSN puts recycled waxed and organic cotton on a technical daypack. Both signal premium equals engineered material that looks and feels natural.
T4 · Color: away from black, premium holds muted (Watch)
Jul 6 — Mainstream luggage going bold: teal, aquamarine, turquoise. July pistachio, Rimowa Ballerina Pink, Floyd Magic Purple all part of the break. Neutrals (beige, olive, sand) carry the sustainable end. The gap between mainstream-bold and premium-muted is an opening.
T5 · Indie & anti-logo as the growth story (Building)
Jul 13 — FARA launched with a debut messenger and sling, from the founders behind Wookey Backpacks and Wookey Design Studio nearly three decades ago. BareBag on Kickstarter with a modular sustainable EDC crossbody. Indie pipeline still filling.
Jul 6 — The new luxury bag is indie. Janessa Leoné sold out three times on Moda Operandi. Liffner and Parker Thatch building against it-bag logo culture, material-first, mostly DTC. Direct tailwind for a premium, quiet, material-led brand.
T6 · Women's silhouette (Watch)
Jul 13 — 2026 runways reading slouchy and unstructured, suede and soft leathers, taupe/stone/ivory neutrals, minimal branding as the luxury signal (Bottega, Acne Studios, Loewe Amazona 180). A possible turn away from the rounded-minimal read below. Two competing shape signals now, soft/lived-in vs rounded/clean. Watch which wins.
Jul 6 — Uniqlo Round Mini and Round Ultra Mini still viral — curved seamless body, deceptively large capacity, minimal hardware. Mainstreaming the rounded women's carry shape. Brands to track here: BAGGU, Madewell, Longchamp, Telfar, Cuyana.
T7 · Tracking baked in (Watch)
Jul 6 — July Capsule Carry-On Pro ships with CaseSafe (AirTag-equivalent). Peak Design bags all have hidden AirTag pockets. Findable-by-default becoming table stakes, not a premium add.
T8 · Soft front over hard shell (New)
Jul 13 — Carl Friedrik Carry-on X Core pairs a recycled soft-shell front pocket with a hard polycarbonate shell, quick-access laptop up front and structure behind. Béis Pro Rolling Duffle bridges the same soft-to-hard gap from the duffle side. Hybrid format looks like its own emerging category. First data point.
How to keep this going: each new weekly recap adds a dated line to the top of the matching theme, or opens a new theme. Bump the status from Watch to Building to Settled as a thread firms up.
