CANVASWORKER

Built by Hand. Designed for Scale.

We bridge the gap between design studios and factories. From first sketch to factory ready prototype, our Costa Mesa workshop is a classroom, a proving ground, and a launchpad for products that ship.

What We Do

  • Product Design that translates concepts into manufacturable detail
  • Product Development Guidance from sketch to prototype to approvals
  • Factory Liaison and Onboarding to build effective partnerships with your factory

Founder Experience

Douglas Davidson began his career in the motorsports industry, designing gear, racing gloves, and footwear for professional teams across Motocross, F1, IndyCar, and NASCAR. He later was a Product Designer for Jerome Mage, founder of Mage Design and Jacques Marie Mage, before establishing his first independent design studio.

In 2005, Douglas founded The Brown Buffalo, a creative studio focused on product design and development. The studio worked with a range of clients across lifestyle, outdoor, and technical markets, building a reputation for combining hands on craft with factory ready execution.

From there, Douglas transitioned into senior design leadership roles at global brands. At The North Face, he served as Design Director for Equipment and Innovation, shaping advanced product concepts and aligning creative vision with technical performance. He then became Senior Design Director at Burton Snowboards, where he helped lead the development of equipment lines and innovation projects.

In 2015, Douglas launched CANVASWORKER, bringing together more than 25 years of experience across designer, developer, and business director roles. His foundation was shaped by direct time with factory pattern makers and sewing operators in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, an education that built a rare connection between studio ideas and factory realities.

Douglas has also shared his expertise as an educator at ArtCenter College of Design and through CANVASWORKER classes, where students and professionals gain the tools and confidence to bring ideas to life.

This broad career spanning studio, factory, classroom, and brand leadership shapes how CANVASWORKER builds today: hands on craft, factory ready clarity, and shared knowledge.
